The simple answer is no. It is not possible to be married on one day and provide a different date for your marriage certificate. If your parents desire a celebrant to conduct a ceremony, you can opt for a commitment ceremony instead. This type of ceremony does not involve signing any legal documents, so you won't be legally married. Later, on the chosen significant date, you can arrange a small legal ceremony where you can sign the marriage certificate.

Remember that legally the latest you can lodge your intention to marry is one calendar month before your wedding date. But it would be nice if you could give your celebrant more time to compose your ceremony script. You should also take into account the busiest time of the year for a celebrant and this is generally October through to February.

The first thing on any couple's mind is the fee and what's included. Some celebrants offer a signing table with chairs and a PA system included in their fee. Check about extra fees for traveling or even for a rehearsal.

After the topic of fees has been settled, then you need to explore if their ideas of a wedding are the same as yours. Some couples want a Hollywood production while others want a cozy, intimate ceremony and still others want a stand-up comedian. Personally, I'm more Shakespearian (think Romeo and Juliet) and couldn't tell a joke to save my life.

And lastly, consider whether the celebrant is easy to work with and accedes to your wishes or is bossy and overbearing (which you don't need). Although some guidance is good.

You could explain to your sister the particular vibe you want to achieve at your wedding.  Add, that you've chosen to make your special day for adults only to allow them to relax and enjoy themselves more fully. And let's face it. Any event of a formal nature is very boring for children especially if they have to remain seated for some time. It's best to let them stay at home and have fun.

I usually post the wedding documents the day after the wedding. Here in Perth, the BDM (Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages) will generally register your marriage within about 5-10 working days (depending on Australia post delivery times and the workload of BDM). If you want to have proof of your marriage, then you need to apply to the BDM office for your certificate. Applications can be submitted by post, in person or online. And don't forget, they charge for this.

Absolutely! It's completely reasonable to have a dry ceremony. Many couples want their ceremony to be meaningful and focused, so this is a very normal request. Sure you can exchange your vows on your wedding day but , as everyone else has mentioned, this doesn't mean you're married. All you're really having is a commitment ceremony. You can go on a separate day to the Registry office to complete the legalities but it may not be as cost-effective as you wish. First, the Registry charges $180 to lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage, and second, I believe they charge $225 to perform your ceremony. It's not much more to find a Celebrant to actually marry you on your wedding day and it's more personalized as your Celebrant will do everything to make your day special.

This is what I would call a 'themed wedding' and I'm sure they're lots of fun...but I haven't been asked to do one yet. I'm really looking forward to someone asking me to dress up in a steampunk or goth costume. Most Celebrants would be game enough to go along with a themed wedding but that all depends on whether you're talking about kilts and sporrans, Hawaiian shirts with leis or something else. If the costume is not something that can be put together from items in the closet, then I'm fairly certain the couple will incur the cost of hiring the outfit for their Celebrant.

Can a person with student/travel visa gets married in Australia? During my trip to Melbourne, my partner proposed to me and we are planning to get married in Australia. However, he is holding a student visa while I'm traveling on a tourist visa. Please advice, thanks :)
