Can we write our own vows?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely!! This is your ceremony and your day and you can make your vows as personal and unique as you wish. Of course, you don't have to write your own or if you are struggling to know how to approach it, I have lots of templates, suggestions and ideas to share with you to get you started.

There are also legal and formal vows which must be included, but these can be said separately from your personal vows, or included in them, if you wish

What does a Celebrant actually do?

I will meet with you several times (phone, F2F or online) to get to know you both, hear your love story, find out what sort of ceremony you want (and assist and guide you by supplying lots of resources and ideas where needed. I will write a personalised ceremony unique to you both as a couple, complete and lodge all legal paperwork with Births, Deaths & Marriages NSW within all the required time frames, perform the ceremony on the day and ensure that all is setup correctly and it runs smoothly and be a support to you both, prior to and during the ceremony. In short, I will take all the stress out of the actual ceremony and the legal work and go above and beyond to accommodate your wishes to make this day truly special for you.

What paperwork do I need to supply?

Both persons need to supply Birth Certificate, and/or a Passport as proof of Birth and Passport or Drivers Licence for Photo Identity .

If either or both persons are divorced then you need to supply the Divorce Certificate. If a widow/er then Death Certificate of former partner is required. I need to sight all originals and this is done at one of the early meetings when the NOIM (Notice of Intended Marriage) is completed and signed. This document must be signed between 1 month to 18 months prior to the wedding date.

Is a wedding rehearsal necessary?

It is not completely necessary but 99.9% advisable, unless circumstances make it not feasible. It is important so that we can go through the choreography for the day - where everyone stands, practicing  the entrance and exit ( to the music if possible) to get the timing right etc. , readers or speakers know when and where they are speaking and how any special rituals ( Sand/Unity Candles/Hand Fasting etc) are going to work. Also, it is usual at the rehearsal which is held during the week or day before the ceremony for the Declaration of No legal Impediment doc to be signed by the couple. This is better than having to worry about signing it on the actual day before the Ceremony commences.

Question 7

Who do we choose to be the Witnesses

Any 2 persons, over the age of 18 years can be the witnesses. They need to be able to hear and understand the Ceremony in the language it is being spoken in - if this is an issue with either of them an AUSLAN signer/or Language Interpreter can be engaged to ensure they clearly hear/understand the content of the ceremony.

Asking family members/ friends to be witnesses is often a good way to involve those special people who are not part of the bridal party.
